Teacher Recruitment and Retention: Summer

Many leaders are deep in hiring season and focused on best practices for recruitment and interviewing.

  • “PHS is in need of an awesome health science teacher. If you are looking to work with the best students and teachers in the country give me a call at [blank] or email me at [blank]” —High School Principal in Tennessee
  • “One approach this hiring season: post-interview, I provide the contact info of teacher(s) on the interview team and encourage the candidate to ‘reach out to them…and ask them ANYTHING you want.’” —High School Principal in North Carolina
  • “Before you go on vacation and disconnect make sure your vacancies are filled for the 2022-2023 school year. The year is ‘officially over’ then. You’ll thank me later.” —Leader in Texas
  • “During this hiring season, I have received pleas for help or guidance or a lifesaver from those wanting to come our way or wanting to find hope amidst what can be only described as professional despair. I am both burdened by these pleas and grateful for what we have.” —Elementary School Principal in Indiana

While June is historically a peak month for hiring, recent staff shortages have resulted in school leaders hiring throughout the year. In a sample of about 5,000 school leaders 344 mentioned hiring in March (off-season) compared to 364 mentions in June (hiring season).
