Legislation: Critical Race Theory & Anti-LGBTQ Laws
As the classroom becomes an increasingly politicized space, bills banning Critical Race Theory, creating censorship and discriminating anti-LGBTQ+/trans laws make the news, educators are using social media to share their disapproval. While teachers are often outspoken about their views online, school leaders are often less likely to vocalize their political beliefs due to the public-facing nature of their roles.
- “As parents, educators, citizens, and school leaders, we should oppose efforts to make our schools the proxy for culture and political warfare as the anti-CRT and anti-LGBQT legislation and book bans intend to do. We teach history. We teach all students. We model democracy.” —Superintendent in Georgia
- “Most years I would openly guffaw at this bill but this year it won’t even crack the top 10 most illogical, most misguided, or just downright dumbest educational bills being proposed in the Iowa Legislature.” —High School Principal in Iowa
- “Think teaching shortages are bad now? Read up on these two issues: Indiana House Bill 1134 [and] Oklahoma Senate Bill 1470.” —Teacher
- “If I were a teacher in Indiana, I would be fired bc I wouldn’t allow non-educators to police my lessons; I would refuse to whitewash my lessons; I would change lessons as needed to meet the needs of students. How we gonna organize for freedom & respect? Stop stressing teachers!” —Educator
- “Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Act falls in line with this growing trend of inhumane education legislation that is attempting to eradicate humanizing language from the mouths of educators. This toxic centering of heteronormativity in our schools cannot be ignored.” —Middle School Teacher in Massachusetts
- “The book-banning and CRT-banning community is so counterproductive it’s actually harmful.” —Middle School ELA Teacher in Mississippi
