Math Identities: Back to School Strategies

As the school year begins, educators are looking forward to building students’ math identities and expressing the importance of creating a learning environment where all students can see themselves as mathematicians.

  • “On the first day of school, students take a picture with this ‘I am a math person’ frame. I learned from Atomic Habits that it STARTS with identity. We need to believe we are math people (because we are).” —Math Post-Secondary Educator in California
  • “Biggest take away from #MathSummit2022: When helping students form their math identity, communicate that Mistakes are expected, Mistakes are accepted, Mistakes are inspected, and then Mistakes are corrected. Can’t wait to use this with my students!” —Elementary Teacher in North Carolina
  • “Math identity is everything to me. I want my students to believe that math is really a part of their lives, and that they can use it as a tool to better understand themselves and the world around them, and work to make it better.” —High School Math Teacher in California
  • “Love to see classrooms where students can see themselves as mathematicians!  We talked @ Hive this summer about Math Identity, agency and how routines can help affirm our students as mathematicians. ” —Math Educator in North Carolina
